Exercise: Practicing Directive Thoughts

Connect the 3-step breathing exercise with your everyday speech. As you go about your day, find in-person communication or virtual situations where you can practice deciding what you want to communicate before you inhale and speak.

You can begin to pair an actionable intention, “request,” “teach”, “persuade”, “inquire”, etc., with the inhale of your Diaphragmatic Breath. This practice can be as simple as ordering at a food counter or as nuanced as engaging in a targeted discussion.

Learner Milestones

  • Create a Directive Thought by matching a Diaphragmatic Breath to an Actionable Intention
