Exercise: Presenting with a Visual Aid

As you try out different positioning, practice with your finished poster or display incorporating movement and positioning to facilitate the focus relationship to guide your audience through your content. If you are presenting a poster, you may stand to one side of the display in the available Horizontal space.  You may also choose to move around the poster to the other side to direct focus to a portion of material. Think about the vantage point of the learning audience and consider how your active movement or gesture can guide what you want them to focus on as you present. Remember that unlike a PowerPoint or video slide presentation, a poster displays the entirety of its information simultaneously. You can integrate verbal instructions as to where and when you want the learner to visually focus. This technique will also contribute to your ability to organize your ideas and present clearly. If at all possible, practice in an environment that is similar to the actual presentation environment and display setup.

Don’t wait until the last minute to practice!
