“The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Consortium’s (UROC) Graduate College programs have enjoyed a long history of working with the Human Communications Studio (HCS). Our scholars have consistently provided positive feedback about their learning experiences with how to improve their communication skills. Specifically, the students not only learn how to incorporate physical techniques of voice and body positioning, they also employ critical thinking skills to evaluate their audience and strategize how they can best communicate their academic work. Learning to think strategically about their scientific communication clearly increases scholar confidence and we witness their improved skills during class activities and presentations. Our most recent program evaluations reflect a high satisfaction rate with the HCS workshop and video resources, ranking up to 83% “Extremely Satisfied or Very Satisfied” on a 100% scale. “I recently had a job interview at Stanford University where I not only was presenting in front of my potential boss, but her entire lab (30+ people). I had three individual sessions with Kathryn in preparation for my interview. In general, I have bad presentation anxiety, especially with something as important like a job interview. Kathryn taught me the skills on how to constructively prepare for my interview, and how to prepare for the ‘moment before’. Kathryn was able to target my insecurities and replace them with my own confidence. At the interview, my work was the focus of my presentation, instead of my anxiety. A few weeks later, I received a call from Stanford offering me the position. Without Kathryn’s help I would have not performed as well as I did.
