Exercise: How Does it Work?

Think about how you learn.

Whether it was memorizing the alphabet, tying a shoe, playing an instrument, learning a sport, driving a car, or assembling a table with a set of directions, everything we learn can be analyzed through its component parts.

Understanding the components and expectations involved allows us to begin approximating a result, and approximation and engagement over time leads to concept mastery.

We are accustomed to developing knowledge bit by bit, to breaking ideas down to fundamentals, and to practicing a physical pattern over and over until it is fluent in our body.

This discipline is no different.

As you move from topic to topic you will discover how you can combine components and how they work together. You will also be asked to practice through integrating new skills and by identifying WHY you naturally prefer some patterns over others.

Reflect upon your learner’s mind as you approach each lesson and stay open to trying out patterns that are unfamiliar.

Learner Milestones

  • Recognize that patterns of verbal and nonverbal cues are interpreted during the meaning-making process
  • Understand that the approximation of new skills is key to developing your own relationship to novel concepts
  • Perceive how practicing a wide variety of new patterns can help you to better interpret the communicative intentions and preferences of others
